The streaming giant is doubling down on bobbleheads and T-shirts to monetize its fandoms.

Donning Mickey Mouse ears at Disney World is a childhood rite of passage â but where will todayâs youths, raised on streaming services, empty their piggy banks?
Netflix has an answer.
Following in Disneyâs lucrative footsteps, the streaming giant is going all-in on merch for its original content, per The Wall Street Journal.
So far, Netflix has created things like:
- A âStranger Thingsâ T-shirt emblazoned with âHellfire Club,â one of its bestselling products thus far.
- A line of bridal dresses based on âBridgerton,â set to debut this December, priced at $1.6k-$3k.
- A âSquid Gameâ Be@rbrick sculpture thatâs ~2 feet tall and costs $675.
And Netflix has taken its fandom one step further with IRL experiences, like Bridgerton Balls and an immersive âSquid Gameâ experience.
But nowâŚ
⌠with its live-action show âOne Piece,â Netflix is trying something new.
Rather than waiting to see how the show performed, the company began making merchandise ~18 months in advance:
- Sweatshirts and T-shirts with Zara.
- A clothing drop with PacSun.
- Even some chocolate bars with FYE.
But why crank out snacks and sweatsuits without knowing if a show will catch on?
Because Netflix has been burned before.

⌠fans of the show rushed to buy merch online.
But Netflix, without merchandising rights to the series, missed out on the sales of unofficial T-shirts, toys, and bags swirling on social media.
(Netflix has since partnered with MGM, the studio that owns the âWednesdayâ IP, on merchandise.)
Selling stuff can be riskyâŚ
⌠when the success of a new show is unknown.
Products like figurines can take over a year to produce, which leaves Netflix forced to take a gamble.

|
One day last October, in the southwestern Ukrainian city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, the lights went out due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian power systems. It lasted two days and set the tone for a brutal winter of energy rationing and rolling blackouts.
In the darkness, 19-year-old university student Olena Hryhorenko reached for a flashlight and started to knit. She has knitted since she was 12 and started an Etsy shop called Toysknit in 2018, selling knitted deers, squirrels, and bunnies in Easter and Christmas garb.
The cold, dark months were a challenge, but Hryhorenko managed to keep her business afloat and shipments on time. In the last year, sheâs sold 100+ knitted figurines to buyers across the world, using the money to help support her family.
Across Ukraine â where there are more Etsy items for sale per capita than every large European country except the UK and Germany â there are thousands of crafters like Hryhorenko.
Over the last 19 months, selling on Etsy and other digital platforms has been one of the surest ways to make money in an economy ravaged by war. For some Ukrainians, at times itâs been the only way.
