Authorities claim she died of a heart attack, but her family [alleges](https://time.com/6216513/mahsa-amini-iran-protests-police/) she was beaten by police. Since then: - At least 41 people have since died amid widespread protests, [per](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/sep/26/death-toll-grows-in-iran-as-mahsa-amini-protests-continue-for-10th-night) *The Guardian*. - The Iranian government has restricted internet access and social media platforms, which it [also did](https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/24/tech/iran-internet-blackout/index.html) amid deadly protests over fuel prices in 2019. The latter means that citizens can’t communicate or document what’s happening. #### **How sanctions come into play** US sanctions on Iran have restricted internet services to personal communication, such as blogging, social networking, or messaging apps, [per](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/01/13/iran-tech-sanctions-internet-access/) *The Washington Post*. This has limited Iranians’ access to new tech, per Iran analyst Holly Dagres, actually making it *easier* for authorities to shut down services during unrest. #### **So, last week…** … the US Treasury Department issued an [updated license](https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0974) allowing US tech companies to expand services and platforms. Elon Musk’s SpaceX also [activated](https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-starlink-active-iran-government-internet-outages-report-2022-9) its Starlink service in Iran, though [some](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/26/why-elon-musks-starlink-wont-impact-protests-in-iran) are concerned about the thousands of smuggled terminals it would require.
