In the past month, Cohere has reportedly been in talks to raise money at a [$6B+](https://www.reuters.com/technology/ai-startup-cohere-talks-raise-funding-6-bln-plus-valuation-sources-2023-02-06/) valuation, and Stability AI was said to be seeking a [$4B](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-03/openai-rival-stable-diffusion-maker-seeks-to-raise-funds-at-4-billion-valuation?sref=3Ac2yX40) valuation. Last week, Anthropic, after raising $400m and notching a [$4.1B](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/openai-rival-anthropic-raises-funding-at-4-1-billion-valuation?utm_campaign=Automated+Fallback+R&utm_content=89&utm_medium=email&utm_source=cio&utm_term=19&rc=yvoyej) valuation, raised another $300m. This week, Adept raised $350m at a [$1B+](https://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrickcai/2023/03/14/adept-ai-startup-raises-350-million-series-b/) valuation. At least [50](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/14/technology/ai-funding-boom.html) companies being incubated at Y Combinator are focused on the space. Mobius AI, founded by four AI researchers at Google barely with an idea, was recently valued at [~$100m](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/14/technology/ai-funding-boom.html) just a week after launch. #### **What’s that phrase about gold rushes? Sell shovels?** Many AI startups may struggle to outgun Big Tech’s armies of engineers and widespread distribution. - For instance, the AI-powered presentation maker Tome raised [$43m](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/02/22/2613034/0/en/Tome-Is-Fastest-Productivity-Tool-To-Reach-1M-Users-Raises-43M-Series-B-to-Empower-All-Storytellers.html) last month. This week, both [Google](https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/14/23639273/google-ai-features-docs-gmail-slides-sheets-workspace) and [Microsoft](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2023/03/16/introducing-microsoft-365-copilot-your-copilot-for-work/) announced competing features. Sam Lessin, a venture capitalist at Slow Ventures, told *The New York Times*, “The absolute vast majority of the [AI] spoils will go to the incumbents” and that the best way to invest in AI is through Big Tech stocks. **BTW: **Yes, there is a [$58m AI-focused “hacker house”](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/03/15/ai-cerebral-valley-hacker-house/) in San Francisco.
